Description Legal Assistants directly support lawyers and occasionally oversee other legal staff, such as file clerks or legal secretaries.Legal Assistants should have computer and technical knowledge as well as strong analytical, communication and organizational skills.In some cases, law firms prefer three to five years of legal experience in a law firm or other corporate legal department.
Responsibilities
Making sure copied documents adhere to original standards
Execute word processing, filing and faxing
Look after computer database input and retrieval
Look over matter management and record keeping
Categorize e-documents and files
Find and retrieve electronic documents from a variety of court and agency web sites
Be in charge of legal research and investigative tasks, including obtaining information or documents from outside parties, as directed
Classify documents and gather data as directed by lawyers and paralegals
Produce correspondence and memorandum
Scan and photocopy documents Requirements - Organizing and tracking files for important transactions or case documents, including pleadings and voluminous discovery documents; creating and maintaining a case-management database
2+ years of relevant experience
Experience assisting lawyers in preparing for transactional closings, depositions, hearings, trials and conferences; completing many administrative tasks, including, working on individual cases or transactions
Conducting routine discovery
Investigating the factual evidence of a transaction or case and preparing exhibits, charts and diagrams to display information
Drafting legal court documents, such as pleadings, motions, affidavits and subpoenas; transactional documents, such as trusts, wills, contracts and real estate leases; and closing documents
Foundational knowledge in Microsoft Excel
Adeptness in Billing Functions
General familiarity with Calendar Management
Expertise in LexisNexis
Practical knowledge of Complaint Handling
Strong familiarity with Management System
Experience with Microsoft Office Suites
Case Management Software experience desired
Demonstrated knowledge of Briefing
Documentation experience highly preferred
