Description

The Purchasing Agent for a Construction company is responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and purchasing materials, equipment, and services necessary for construction projects. This role involves coordinating with suppliers, ensuring timely delivery of quality materials, and maintaining cost-effective procurement practices. The ideal candidate will have strong negotiation skills, industry knowledge, and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.

Key Responsibilities:

Sourcing and Procurement:

  • Identify and evaluate potential suppliers based on project requirements.

  • Obtain and review quotes from suppliers to determine best pricing and terms.

  • Negotiate contracts, terms, and pricing with suppliers to secure cost-effective deals.

  • Issue purchase orders and ensure accurate documentation.

Inventory Management:

  • Monitor inventory levels to prevent shortages or overstock situations.

  • Coordinate with project managers to forecast material needs and ensure timely procurement.

  • Manage and track the delivery of materials to job sites.

  • Conduct regular inventory audits and reconcile discrepancies.

Supplier Relations:

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers and vendors.

  • Address and resolve any issues or disputes with suppliers promptly.

  • Evaluate supplier performance and provide feedback to ensure quality and reliability.

Cost Control:

  • Monitor market trends and identify cost-saving opportunities.

  • Analyze purchasing data to identify areas for cost reduction.

  • Ensure compliance with budgetary constraints and financial guidelines.

Compliance and Reporting:

  • Ensure all purchases comply with company policies, procedures, and regulations.

  • Maintain accurate and organized procurement records.

  • Prepare reports on procurement activities and supplier performance for management review.

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with project managers, site supervisors, and other stakeholders to understand material requirements and project timelines.

  • Coordinate with the accounts payable department to ensure timely payment of invoices.

    Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of purchasing experience, preferably in the construction industry.

  • Familiarity with construction materials, equipment, and supply chain management.

Skills:

  • Strong negotiation and contract management skills.

  • Proficiency in procurement software and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Attention to detail and accuracy in record-keeping.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
