Assistant Controller

If you're a detail-oriented Assistant Control, Robert Half Finance & Accounting might have an opportunity for you with one of their clients. The Assistant Controller role will ensure financial reporting, accounting systems, processes and controls are compliant with all technical and regulatory requirements. The role requires high-level analytical and financial modeling skills. This position will lead the Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll functions, managing a team of four employees. The ideal candidate will have strong technical and analytical skills and will possess excellent communication skills. The Assistant Controller will report directly to the CFO. The candidate should have exceptional time management and organizational skills. This full-time employment opportunity is based in the Flint, Michigan area. Major responsibilities

  • Maintain implementation and insure adherence to accounting policies and procedures

  • Lend a hand to ensure a competent, trained staff through goal setting, regular assessment, and development

  • Backfill for Controller as appropriate

  • Contribute to the preparation of GAAP financial statements, including budgeting and forecasting

  • Administer regular account reconciliation to completion

  • Foster accountability and the meeting of deliverables

  • Advanced preparation and coordination of fiscal year-end audits

  • Consider and form Ad Hoc financial reports

  • Identify and develop process improvements to streamline reporting and improve team efficiency

  • Direct the accounting team during the closing process to secure deadlines are met

  • Establish relevant and timely reports on financial data analytics like the monthly flash report, key financial metrics, and actual spend against budgets/outlook

  • Additional duties as assigned

  • Organize multiple procedures, policies, and technical accounting analyses

-Develop financial models and perform monthly variance analysis throughout the year to assist leadership in identifying causes and potential solutions for material variances.

  • Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations and lead quarterly balance sheet reviews

  • Support month-end and year-end close process

  • Develop and document business processes and policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls



  • Strong technical background in public accounting (GAAP)

  • Ability to multitask effectively

    • Complete understanding of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems

    • Crucial accounting experience, including as a Bookkeeper preferred

  • CPA certification a plus

  • Top notch analytical, quantitative and social skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. MBA is highly desirable.

  • Microsoft Excel experience desired

  • Excellent written, verbal and social communication skills

  • 5+ years of general ledger accounting experience

-Demonstrates team experience and collaborative approach to solving problems

  • Strong organizational skills; must be detailed oriented

  • Ability to follow up on pending issues and meet deadlines.

-Leadership skills with prior experience coaching and developing teams
