Robert Half Bookkeeper in Petaluma, California

If you're comfortable with establishing and maintaining the organization's accounting principles, practices, procedures, and initiatives, as well as all general accounting and bookkeeping functions, including the preparation of financial statements, you could be a good candidate for this position.

Your responsibilities

  • Maintaining adherence to federal, state, and local legal requirements by keeping up to date on them, filing reports, and advising management on needed actions

  • Carefully filing documents to preserve historical records

  • Reconciling bank and general ledgers, and processing payroll

  • Putting together the trial balance and financial statements, including balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement

  • Tracking fixed assets and constructing depreciation schedules

  • Ensuring accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close

  • Processing accounts payable and accounts receivable; handling collections as needed

  • Overseeing accounting clerks and entry-level bookkeeper


  • Competence with financial data analysis and report generation that is prompt and accurate

  • Prior payroll experience preferred

  • Can work independently with minimal supervision

  • High school diploma or similar accreditation, and an AA degree or higher in Accounting or Business recommended

  • 5+ years of experience in the bookkeeping field

  • Earlier work involving Excel and QuickBooks

  • Accounts Payable (AP) experience preferred

  • Solid understanding of bookkeeping

  • Account reconciliation experience highly desired

  • Proficiency in Accounts Receivable (AR)

  • Foundational knowledge in general ledger

  • A deep understanding of accrual and cash basis of accounting

  • Possess strong organizational and follow-up skills

  • Be able to prioritize workload and perform in a fast-paced and challenging environment

  • Proven flexibility to adapt to changes in procedures and job assignments
