Robert Half is seeking candidates who have a knack for leading with high standards, positively motivating others, and making critical decisions and have experience taking charge of an accounting and clerical department, for a Controller position at a reputable company. This position directs and coordinates the administrative, accounting, and finance operations helping to ensure the fiscal integrity and long-term financial viability of the organization. The Controller’s responsibilities include client accounts, expense allocations; reconciliation of gift receipts; fiscal overview of federal grants and contracts; budget preparation and fiscal overview for special projects; internal financial reporting; financial analyses; internal auditing and independent audit preparation; and other supervisory, oversight, management and analytical functions as assigned.

Major responsibilities

  • Directs and coordinates accounting data recording, accounting records, accounting services and other accounting operations to ensure the prompt and accurate accounting responsibilities to the organization.

  • Plans and schedules work for the department to assure proper distribution of assignments and adequate personnel for the performance of duties.

  • Directs monitoring of revenues and expenditures for realization of and compliance with approved budgets.

  • Prepares reports and analyses, including departmental income statements and required financial reports, for management staff; internal auditing; state and federal aid; and grants and contracts.

  • Directs and supervises highly skilled professional staff and performs various personnel functions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisals, and work schedules.

  • Manage the creation of and monthly monitoring of the annual budget and forecasts


  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

  • Excellent technology, analytics and supervisory/ management experience required

  • BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, Economics or other business related field

  • High attention to detail

  • Progressive accounting experience, including as a Controller preferred

  • Microsoft Great Plains Accounting experience

  • Solid understanding of working with Grants

  • Deep understanding of month end closings

  • Self-driven motivator who takes initiative on projects with a strong ability to understand and solve creative challenges

  • Ability to handle multiple projects within strict deadlines
