Robert Half Project Controller in Santa Clara, California

Description

Our client is looking for a 100% remote Project Controller who will oversee all projects accounting functions, including for first-time construction initiatives and various government grant agreements. This will include performing monitoring of project progress, investigate variances, and ensure billings are accurately reflected. You will play a key role in tracking project performance and then communicating appropriate GAAP/ASC accounting treatment for accurate and timely financial reporting. You will be crucial in providing project managers and external parties with timely reports of budget vs actual performance, actuals vs prior period actuals as well as project forecasts. This role will serve as a liaison between finance and engineering groups and play a key role in building a framework related to the scaling of procurement processes.

The successful candidate will have a strong analytical and critical thinking skillset and be well-versed in spreadsheet modeling. The ability to stay organized and have an attentiveness to detail while also considering the broader picture of project objectives and business goals will be key attributes of the ideal candidate.

Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Tracking budget and actual spend across relevant PO’s and project areas, including for various Advanced Research Project Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) government grants

  • Working closely with engineering team leads to understand project parameters and develop a framework to accurately cost and report on project deliverables and milestones

  • Utilizing activity based costing or cost accounting methodologies to drive comprehensive view of project spend

  • Must understand cost versus capitalization accounting rules in order to appropriately capture all capitalizable costs, particularly for fixed and capital project assets

  • Ensuring documentation is properly organized and maintained to support timely and accurate financial reporting

  • Performing capital cost estimations to determine total project size and scope

  • Preparing reports in a timely fashion to support monthly and quarterly close cycles

  • participate in reconciliations of billings and cash disbursements

  • Familiarity with regulatory frameworks such as Sarbanes-Oxley and Defense Contract Audit Agency reporting standards to ensure a robust control environment exists in project areas

  • Engaging with business leaders to proactively advise and guide on risks and controls for new projects, programs, or initiatives.

  • Providing recommendations to cross-functional groups on vendor management best practices

  • Communicating thoughtfully and clearly to project managers and developing routine project review and approval processes

  • Implementation of time-tracking procedures across the engineering department as necessary

  • Updating contracts according to vendor or customer requirements and reporting associated budget amendments to relevant stakeholders

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or other related field

  • Minimum eight years of accounting experience in a public company setting

  • Experience with full cycle accounting

  • Advanced proficiency in managing general ledgers, journal entries, and account reconciliations

  • Exceptional ability to prepare project budgets and financial forecasts

  • Big 4 experience and CPA are strongly preferred

  • Strong working knowledge of Excel and NetSuite ERP

Bonus Qualifications:

  • MBA, Master of Accountancy, finance, or other relevant field of study

  • Has startup experience and building project controllership workstreams from scratch

  • Preferred remote location: Pacific Time Zone
