Robert Half is looking for a Controller, who will have broad business engagement and impact with a business in the Construction/Contractor field. The ideal candidates for this position can manage the process to ensure that models are correct and are fully accrued each month, verify and hold the operations team accountable to ensure end to end incentive processing, payments, accounting and related financial controls are operating effectively. Based in Troy, Michigan, this Controller position will be a long-term contract / temporary engagement. Detailed Description: Our Troy client is in need of an Interim Controller. The Interim Controller will be responsible for ensuring all month end processes are completed, including bank and account reconciliations, journal entries, managing the general ledger and producing financial statements. The Interim Controller would also be responsible for cost, project and variance analysis. In addition, the Interim Controller will be responsible for SOX compliance and controls, as well as supporting the budgeting and forecasting process.

Major responsibilities

  • Analyze and observe controls to ensure they are effectively designed and operating in partnership with compliance

  • Lead all processes of budgeting, forecasting, and reporting for all accountable programs

  • Assemble evidence and qualitative discussion of monthly financial results across global programs to support SOX controls

  • Become well-versed in key financial results and movements across programs to summarize and discuss with key business partners

  • Collaborate with various business partners for various program controllership and FP& A activities such as ensuring accrual models are accurate and accounting methods are appropriate, as well as true-up activities and answer queries from business, area and subsidiary controllers

  • Obtain a thorough understanding of essential financial results and movements across programs, then summarize and discuss them with key business partners

  • Ensure timely cash flow forecasts by collaboration with the Treasury

  • Ongoing monitoring of actual spend against budget, as well as leading actions needed for any expected shortfalls


The ideal Interim Plant Controller must have at least 10 years of accounting and finance experience, with 5 years as a Controller in a manufacturing environment. In addition, the ideal candidate will have prior cost and project experience environment, as well as prior experience overseeing accounts payable and receivable. The ideal candidate will also have large ERP experience, such as Microsoft NAV or Oracle, as well as advanced Excel experience with pivot tables and vLookups. This is a 3+ month temporary position for the right candidate and that candidate.

  • 10+ years professional accounting and controllership or public accounting and internal controls experience and/or Internal Audit or Controls and Compliance

  • Ability to manage, lead change and build process improvements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or other relevant field

    • CPA and/or CMA preferred
  • Proficiency in variance analysis

  • Practical knowledge of financial analysis

  • Microsoft Excel experience

  • Cost analysis experience highly preferred

  • Adeptness in supervising

  • Demonstrated knowledge of SOX

  • Month end closings experience desired

  • Microsoft NAV experience

  • General familiarity with budget forecasting

  • Knowledge of project accounting

  • Prior background in engaging virtually with teams around the globe and providing leadership across finance teams

  • Comprehension of ERP system offerings is preferred

  • Outstanding communication and negotiation skills with experience building trusted advisor/consultant relationships and aptitude for influencing Executives and Business Decision Makers

  • Demonstrated ability to implement solutions, strong analytical and communication skills as well

  • Accomplished in office and accounting computer systems
