Robert Half is reviewing candidates for a growing construction company for an ambitious, determined hands on Controller. This leadership role oversees the entire accounting process reporting into the owner and supervising an AP professional. As the Controller, you will play a crucial role in maintaining internal controls, while overseeing and managing the financial operations, with a specific focus on financial reporting, tax compliance, accounts receivable, accounts payable, job cost/contract management, payroll, and Sage 300 software tasks. Your construction industry knowledge will be instrumental in ensuring accurate and timely financial processes. Reporting directly to the President/Owner, you will collaborate closely with project managers, auditors, and other stakeholders to maintain financial stability and support company growth. The permanent Controller position is situated in the Upper Marlboro, Maryland area 5 days/week from 8 am - 6 pm daily with an hour for lunch.

Key responsibilities:

  • Financial Reporting/Tax

  • Job Cost/Contract Management

  • General Ledger

  • Point person for Sage 300

  • Oversee all accounting receivable transactions

  • Prepare and process contract and service billings

  • Supervise the AP Professional and oversee all accounts payable transactions

  • Supervise the PR Professional and oversee all payroll transactions

  • Main point of contact for all various insurance packages

  • Office management/IT

The ideal candidate for this Construction Controller role will have 10+ years of hands-on day to day construction accounting, Sage 300 software+++, BS in Accounting and the ability to come into the office every day in Upper Marlboro, MD form 8 am - 6 pm and work with all the various department heads. Requirements

  • EXPERT in construction accounting

  • Excellent written, verbal and social communication skills

  • BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, Economics or other business related field

  • Excellent technology, analytics and management experience required

  • Progressive accounting experience, including as a Controller preferred

  • Ability to work well in matrix organization and dealing with ambiguity

  • Ability to handle multiple projects within strict deadlines

  • Sharp, analytical thinking abilities, always seeking to draw connections and identify the "why"

  • Demonstrated ability to build and deliver effective presentations to audiences with wide-ranging backgrounds

  • Practical knowledge of construction project accounting

  • Previous experience working with Accounts Receivable (AR)

  • Experience with bank reconciliations

  • Adeptness in Construction Accounting

  • Good understanding of Accounts Payable (AP)

  • Financial statement preparation experience highly preferred

  • Comprehension of Balance Sheet Reconciliation

  • Hands-on experience with account reconciliation

  • Earlier work involving financial reporting

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Construction Cost

  • Account reconciliation experience highly valued

  • Construction experience

  • General familiarity with Construction Loans

  • Sage Accounting Software experience

  • Prior experience with Balance Sheet Reconciliation

  • Commercial Construction Projects experience highly desired

  • Sage 300 experience desired

  • Strong familiarity with Commercial Construction Projects

  • Background working with month end closings

  • Takes action on items beyond formal job responsibilities
